SNAPSHOT PROJECT: brooklyn
Snapshot New York City is a part of a 3 class course that is custom designed by 100cameras to equip passionate creatives with the tools to empower youth in a community they care about with the opportunity to learn how to process their stories and create change
ABOUT THE PROJECT
This project was led by 100cameras staff as the first-ever 3 class program that is now part of the Snapshot Project Platform, and it was held in New York City in partnership with 826NYC, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6-18 with their creative and expository writing skills through workshops and activities and by supporting excellence in school through after-school tutoring programs.
It was such a delight to work with twelve students based in Brooklyn. Everyone was energetic, committed, and such outside-the-box thinkers when getting creative with their weekly homework. They even requested that we rename the weekly homework "fun stuff to do at home" for the future, and so we're taking that into consideration.
We could not be more impressed (or proud) with how each student uniquely utilized the compositional tools they learned during the course to help document their stories with great passion, individuality, and technique.
STUDENT IMAGE GALLERY
These photographs were selected from the hundreds taken by the students, illustrating the photographic and storytelling skills they developed in the class while also contributing to a larger narrative of their community.
A note from our team -- Snapshot New York City was an early member of our Snapshot Program platform when it was in Beta mode, representing a time in the platform model when we tested the opportunity for leaders and local organizations to utilize our curriculum and method in a way that allowed for student photos to be exhibited and shared yet not sold. This program represents an important experience for the students of 826NYC in New York City and continues to uplift their stories and perspectives as shown in the online gallery exhibit above.
