Snapshot project: bronx
ABOUT THE PROJECT
In Spring of 2018, 9 students from The Foundling's Mott Haven Academy learned to process and tell their stories through 100cameras Snapshot Bronx in New York City, USA. Taught by local photographer, Brooke Holm, these students documented their neighborhood through their lens in a way that celebrated their roots with pride.
The goal of our partner organization, Haven Academy, is to remove the barriers to academic success faced by children in the child welfare and/or foster care system by supporting the child through crisis, working to prevent additional crisis from occurring, and improving the emotional stability and academic abilities of their students.
The achievement gap between children in the child welfare system and their peers in the general community has dire long-term consequences lasting into adulthood. Research over the past three decades has shown that, compared to the general school population, foster children in the United States have poorer attendance rates and are more likely to dropout of high school, are less likely to perform at grade level, are more likely to have behavior and discipline problems, are more likely to be assigned to special education classes, and are less likely to attend college. These negative long-term consequences make it crucial that this gap is addressed when children are young.
100cameras is proud to come alongside these students who are committed achievers and thriving in their education as well as the important and effective work of Haven Academy as they work to respond to any societal barriers in a holistic way. Through the custom 100cameras Snapshot Curriculum, students were guided through activities and tools to remember their past, reflect on their present, and dream toward their future in a way that provides space to process their journey to date so they can create the way for what is ahead.
Through the opportunity, the strength and perseverance of the students shined through in both their stories and their perspectives.
100% of proceeds from the students' photo sales will go directly back to their community. Based on the current needs of the organization, the proceeds raised will help Haven Academy fund off-campus opportunities that provide enrichment not otherwise available to the population they serve.
Haven Middle School is committed to providing diverse multicultural arts programming to their scholars and believes that field trips to community institutions like the Apollo Theater, Studio Museums, or even Jazz at Lincoln Center provide the best exposure for them to develop an appreciation for diverse art forms.
