ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Since 2018, 100cameras X Mott Haven Academy has included students across four program cohorts in partnership with The Foundling's Mott Haven Academy located in New York City, USA. Through these programs taught by local photographers, Brooke Holm and Urban Koi, and classroom teachers, Jaylene Ynfante and Francine Bridge, students processed their experiences and told their stories through their own lens, celebrating their roots with pride.

Haven Academy believes that all students, regardless of economic status or family structure, are entitled to learn in a system that gives them the best chance for success. We believe every child can learn and achieve regardless of life circumstances. Their approach is redefining school by intentionally designing spaces and programs to meet the academic and social-emotional needs of all children, with a focus on those impacted by the child welfare system.  United with their scholars and their families, they aim to dismantle systemic barriers to success through comprehensive support services, responsive curriculum, predictability, and an emphasis on voice and choice.  Haven Academy leads with empathy and forges deep relationships to build a better future in service of their resilient, resourceful, and independent scholars.

My students are a group of diverse eighth graders from the South Bronx. Many students have never had their own personal camera and have enjoyed spending time familiarizing themselves with the camera functions as well as the composition. Before the program, many had preconceived notions that taking pictures was just about clicking a button, but they have grown to appreciate and understand the art and effort behind each photograph. Watching the students express themselves through these photos and our discussions in class has been truly inspirational.

100cameras is proud to come alongside these students who are committed achievers and thriving in their education as well as the important and effective work of Haven Academy. Throughout the curriculum, students were guided through activities that provided tools to process their experiences and lean into self-expression, fostering emotional intelligence and community-building amongst their peers.

Through the opportunity, the strength and perseverance of the students shined through in both their stories and their perspectives.

Experiencing the curriculum has been meaningful for students because they are given the opportunity to express themselves and further understand their peers. Having the space to reflect on their lives and what their story is allows students to open up in ways they may not have in other classes. The curriculum pushes students to not only think about what they stand for today, but what they want to stand for in the future.
