Lower East Side, NYC

photo credit...andrew click to purchaseIn January 2009, 100cameras ventured into our own backyard: the Lower East Side of Manhattan. We partnered with New Life of NYC, an inner-city community center that focuses on improving a child's education and plugging them into an extra-curricular activity that encourages positive construction of their character.

Joining this vision, 100cameras implemented a weekly photography class. Children were given cameras to document their perspective, and they did. For three months, they photographed the details of growing up in the inner city. And now, the reality of their stories can be heard to better their community.

100cameras. lower east side was completed in June 2009. In late September, an exhibition of their photos was launched in their own neighborhood at the Whole Foods Market on Bowery. Whole Foods Market was the official sponsor and host of the event, and the photos were installed in the store's gallery space on the second floor for six months.  The exhibition continues to be showcased throughout various events around the country. 100percent of the funds raised from the children's photographs are given back to the community center.

100cameras specifically donated to the cause of education through New Life’s After-School Learning Center. Many of the students on the Lower East Side are significantly behind in both reading and writing, and we wanted to give New Life more resources to help change that.
